A new tool for monitoring animals that have a consistent pattern of spots or stripes is the open-source software called Wildbook. The harbor seal sub-group of PSEMP’s Marine Mammal Work Group (MMWG) is exploring whether the software can reliably identify harbor seals. If successful, machine learning may allow us to non-invasively identify, track, and enumerate every seal in the Salish Sea!
